Happy May, everybody! This month, we here at 3rdRace are going to focus on ways to spend time with the Lord. Because the Spirit has come and been placed within us who believe, we are with the Lord all the time. Hallelujah! However, there are times when we turn our whole attention to Jesus and spend time with Him intentionally. We set our mind on Him. The different ways in which we can do this are limitless, and we thought it would be fun to share some of the ways we do this that aren’t the traditional bible reading and prayer.
We have a birthday tradition in our family. On your birthday, you get to choose your favorite food for all three meals of the day. The kids love this and we eat things like donuts, pizza, and mac n cheese. However, I choose things like French Toast Strawberry Angel Food Cake, Apple Salad with Glazed Chicken, Steak with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Asparagus, and Funfetti Cake with Fruity Pebbles. To each his own.
Something out of the ordinary that I’ve done with the Lord is to cook my favorite meal and then eat it while spending time with the Lord. I don’t fix Him a plate, but I sit down and enjoy wonderful food with the Lord in my spirit. I let my favorite food remind me of how I really can taste and see that the Lord is good! I eat slowly and focus on the flavors of His presence as I enjoy the flavors of the food.
This doesn’t need to be a romantic meal like a date. This can be a meal with a friend, too. Maybe you really need to talk to the Lord about something and you have a hard time focusing when you just sit on your couch and try to turn to Him. Talk to Him about it over a meal. Or maybe you’re going through something difficult right now, and that seems to be all you can really talk to the Lord about. Fix your favorite meal and while you eat it, talk with the Lord, but that difficult situation is off limits. Enjoy Him and remember that He is in all things. Maybe when you focus on the Lord you do all the talking. While you chew, simply listen just as you do with others around the table. Remember: “Don’t talk with your mouth full.” =)
I have one last idea that came to me as I prepared this post. Unfortunately, I’ve never done this, but I’m definitely going to now. Don’t wait for your birthday. Fix/buy your favorite foods for all three meals of the day and eat every one with Jesus. Spend all day with Him as you enjoy the delights of food. While your body is satisfied by food, let your spirit be satisfied by the Lord. He really is even yummier than anything this world can offer.
He is the True Bread and the Living Water.
