I’d like to start today with a reminder of our reality. For believers, the Eternal Temple of God is made up of His people in Christ. This Temple is also referred to as the House of God. It is God’s dwelling place, His sanctuary, where He tabernacles, where He rests.
Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17
The foundational cornerstone of that building is Jesus. Paul tells us that no one can lay a foundation in God’s House other than Christ.
For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:11
This is an incredible reality!
Jesus is building his Father’s House through his Living Stones (that’s us!). Not to build a house of OUR design for him, but to build the House HE wants built.
But far too easily we start building something other than what He wants. We get distracted by things—even good things—like our dreams for our family, our homes, our lives; our desires for our jobs, our hobbies, our schooling; and even our ministry! Yes, even when we believe we are building something for Him, unless it is His design, it is for not. “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” Psalm 127:1.
When this happens, we forget about the Lord’s House. Or we trust that other people are building it—special people the Lord has called to be builders. Or we believe the Lord wants us focused on something else for a season or two, and then we can get back to building His House.
‘The Lord of hosts says this: These people say the time has not yet come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.’ Then the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet: ‘Is it time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses while this house lies in ruins?’ Haggai 1:2-4
But the truth is the Lord wants His House built and He wants it build now! And by all His Holy Ones, by the entire community of believers in Christ!
So we have to make a choice. Let’s say we choose to let go of our dreams. We choose to release our desires. We stop building our houses. Instead we ask Him to show us his dreams, and his desires. And we start to build his House.
And through this process we find that his dreams are more beautiful than ours ever were. His desires more glorious than we could fathom. His House more magnificent than we could possibly imagine. And we realize anew that His ways are greater than ours could ever be.
‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’
Lord, thank you for helping our feeble dreams die. Thank you for showing us the magnificence of your ways. And thank you for allowing us to be “…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord” (Eph. 2:20-21).
