A Quick Synopsis
Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) lives in a futuristic world in which society is divided into five factions. As each person enters adulthood, he or she must choose a faction and commit to it for life. Tris chooses Dauntless — those who pursue bravery above all else. However, her initiation leads to the discovery that she is a Divergent and will never be able to fit into just one faction. Warned that she must conceal her status, Tris uncovers a looming war which threatens everyone she loves. (Taken from Google)
In the Divergent trilogy and film, factions are societal divisions that classify citizens based on their aptitudes and values. The factions are Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless), and Candor (the honest). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote for the rest of their lives after taking a placement test. The placement test shows you which faction you should be in. You can choose to devote yourself to your faction chosen by the placement test, or you could choose which faction you want to be in, regardless of your placement test results. (Taken from Wikipedia)
There are several pictures of Christ in Divergent. This short video clip shows a picture of our reality in Christ despite the odds:
“This Isn’t Real”
Tris is a Divergent and doesn’t fit into any of one of the five factions, so passing the simulation tests are a breeze for her, because she is capable of mastering them all. Her natural power to not be controlled by the laws of her world is a threat to those in her society who want power and control of this futuristic world. This clip, and several other scenes throughout the movie, remind me of the undeniable power we have in Christ as our true reality. Christ is our way out of unhealthy fear and other negative emotions that the enemy can tempt us into through the use of emotional exaggeration and the focus of self–which can make us feel like we are helpless and incapable.
Christ is all in all things. He is the reality of each of the five factions. He is courage/bravery, He is peace, He is wisdom, He gives of Himself freely, and He is truth. Because He is and He lives in us, we are these things, too, as we deny our self-life in given situations and choose to live by His nature within.
The enemy wants to embellish and highlight our incapabilities in certain situations to keep us from living in the power of God. But with God all things are possible within His will. He is who does the work through us. We are called by faith to rest in Him.
As believers living by the life of Christ, we are, in a sense, Divergents. We don’t fit into any law of man other than the law of the life of Christ. So go be Divergent and proud 🙂
Next week, we will get to hear from another Australian sister and a brother from Philly. So looking forward to it! Do you have a movie you’d like to share with us where you see Christ? Please share!
