Abide In Christ: May 19th

Martin

IN AFFLICTION AND TRIAL

Pray for grace to see in every trouble, small or great, the Father’s finger pointing to Jesus, and saying, abide in Him. This is indeed the Father’s object in sending trial.

Because:

In a storm the tree strikes deeper roots in the soil;in the hurricane the inhabitants of the house abide within, and rejoice in its shelter.

What does Christ get when we bear our cross, which is the yielding of our self-will to the affliction. When we give ourselves over to the process of  affliction, which the Lord has allowed, He gets His way.

 Christ gets…

He gets to be known in deeper, richer ways. There is a precious portion of the Lord that can only be known during affliction.

He gets an image. He’s increased and worked into us and we’re conformed to His image, not our own.

He gets a companion in His sufferings.

He gets a will that is more malleable to His own.

He gets an expression of Himself so that others may know Him through us in their afflictions

He gets a vessel with an increased capacity to contain more of Himself.

James Emery

“Every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bring forth more fruit.”

We are not the fruit. The fruit is a person-Christ. We are the containers for the fruit who is Christ. When we abide in Christ during the pressing affliction we burst forth the sweetest wine. He is the wine.

See how God only took from you that you might have room to take from Him what is so much better.

Thank you Lord that we may rejoice in all the ways in which you decided to make yourself known. Thank you that through times of peace and joy or sorrow and pain that you are always revealing yourself to me. I want to know all of you. You are worth being known.  Thank you that through all these ways, your ways, I am pushed deeper into your life and further away from my own.  Through all this you only bid me, “Come and abide.”

Gosh guys. What a word. When I reflect on Christ’s life while on earth, He lived an utterly surrendered life to affliction…He yielded His whole life, His every moment in every day. And He never once complained. How could He do that? Because He was surrendered completely to His Father’s will. What amazes me, is that this is possible for us…because of Christ in us. Too big for words. Thanks so much for this post. 🙂

How many times I have read that verse about our Lord pruning the branch that bears fruit but when I read it this time in light of the reading and meditating, it’s meaning came to life for me in the framework of abiding in Him. Thank you Jesus.
