I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. I will also walk among you and be your God,and you shall be My people. Lev. 26:12
God has been on a quest for house, a place where He can dwell freely with His people and them with Him. You can see many expressions of His house all throughout the bible as He attempts to tabernacle with his people. But to highlight this particular aspect of the eternal purpose, I am going to jump in the middle of God’s quest for a house by looking at David.
A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART
David would not rest until he found a home, a resting place for the ARK of the covenant which is, at that time, the image of the presence of GOD. Where the Ark was is where God’s presence was known to be as well.
We hear David say things like,
Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent. 1 Sam 7:2
I will not go home; I will not let myself rest. I will not let my eyes sleep nor close my eyelids in slumber until I find a place to build a house for the Lord, a sanctuary for the Mighty One of Israel. Psalm 132:3-5
David had an all consuming desire to give God what HE desired-a home, a resting place. David was not after fulfilling his own heart’s desire, but GOD’s heart and desire.
David is an image and picture of the reality of Christ. Christ is the only true man that is after God’s own heart and desires. He is after a house for his Father, a place where God can dwell together with his people and He can freely express Himself to them. Where He can be the head of his House and His people.
BEYOND TYPES AND SHADOWS TO REALITY
The new testament is about God doing away with the shadows, images, types, and pictures of the house, temple, family, and bride to bring in the full reality that has been hidden for ages. This full reality has moved beyond the physical representation of things. The physical thing is what holds the shadows, images, and pictures of the spiritual reality. A physical house is only a shadow, image, and picture of the true spiritual house of God.
The house of God is not a building, made of brick and mortar, a metaphor, a doctrine, or theology. The house of God is a Person. It is the Lord Jesus Christ. With Jesus Christ’s appearance on earth, the true house of God finally appeared. God found and established his house in the person of JESUS CHRIST.
Everything else that preceded Christ was but a shadow, a picture, and an image of HIM. The Garden, Moses’ tabernacle, David’s Tabernacle, Solomon’s temple, and even the rebuilt temple after exile in Babylon, to name a few, are just types and shadows of CHRIST, the true and only House of GOD.
Jesus was letting his disciples and us know that things were changing and have changed when he said, “destroy this temple and in 3 days I will raise it up.” He was speaking of himself-He is the only full true reality of the temple/house of God that is standing on earth.
He even let them know that it will be upon the foundation of HIMSELF that the church/house of God will be built when He said, Upon this ROCK, I will build my church/house. Upon the foundation of Christ, the Rock, the house of God will be built using God’s living stones.
Christ is the sum of all things for God. It is in the person of Jesus Christ that God is able to call the shots, rule how he sees fit. And Christ is the very expression of God’s Will and Rule. This is why Jesus Christ is the home where God can rest His head. Where God and we find our home and rest is in the person of Christ.
THE TWO HOUSES
Listen to this excerpt that I recorded to highlight this next point:
David and all the people experienced a foretaste of the what is available to us today in CHRIST.
But, we have a similar situation today. There are two tabernacles and it is hard for people to tell the difference between the two.
But we can see ONE obvious difference that’s pointed out to us in 2 Cor 3:17-18,
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Freedom. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
IT is FREEDOM and LIFE-Where the Spirit of the Lord is, the Ark of the Lord is, the presence of the Lord is, where CHRIST is, through the person of the Spirit – There is FREEDOM and LIFE.
Do you realize FREEDOM and LIFE are the person of CHRIST? Freedom and Life are a description of the character and expression of CHRIST Himself. He is freedom. This freedom is not just our freedom, it’s HIS first and foremost.
FREEDOM FOR CHRIST
This is not just our FREEDOM, but FREEDOM for Christ:
- To be head of His own home
- To have His headship be known and expressed through a people
- To build His house the way He wants it build -Unless the Lord builds His house, its builders labor in vain
- To fellowship and commune with us when and however HE wants
- To have the expression of His life made visible through his people
- To be fully received, just as He is and not as our minds conceive or want Him to be
- To transform His people through what ever means He allows
FREEDOM FOR THE CHURCH
- From our sins, guilt and commendation
- To enter boldly and as often as we want into the presence of GOD
- For us to live in and follow Christ wherever He may Lead us as he always intended
- Gaze upon Him whenever and however long we want
- To express our portion of the riches of Christ that has been given to us
- To express Christ and what He wants and not ourselves
- To be consumed with Christ and Christ alone and not a thing or something about Him.
- To be dependent upon Christ as our one and only Life now
- To be built together as His house how Christ sees fit
- To eat, drink, breathe, live CHRIST
- To be His body
- To sing, worship, fellowship day and night all the time unhindered together
- To be, together, the people who are after the very heart of GOD
Where you see this type of FREEDOM expressed, known and enjoyed is where you will find the HOUSE of GOD that meets His heart’s desire. God is the builder, His material are living stones, who are pieces of the ONE ROCK, who are being brought together, fitted together to become the resting place, the home of GOD HIMSELF as Peter tells us in 1 Peter 2:5. God is still building His living stones together, today.
Today Jesus Christ in corporate human expression, a many membered man, is the house of God. The church is the habitation of God in Christ, through the Spirit. This makes her more that just a group of people who believe the same thing or agree upon certain doctrines or theologies- they are in reality today the very body of HIS son, JESUS CHRIST, and thus making them the house of GOD.
Heaven is His throne and earth is His footstool. “Where is the house you will build for Me? Where will My resting place be?” Whom of you will hear the cry of His heart? Whom of you will Hear the Cry of His heart? Whom of you will be a man after God’s own heart? Listen to this song:
It begins when we lay down our desire for what church is to be in order to make room for how He wants it to be, and that is the very image and expression of JESUS CHRIST.
